Grants and Awards

The Society runs the following awards schemes intended to promote activities in Neuropathology, particularly among those BNS members at an early stage in their careers:

• Small grants (max £20,000) to support the advancement of Neuropathology
• Travel Bursaries (max £750) to support:
  • participation in scientific meetings and
  • visits to other laboratories for research purposes or to gain experience
• BNS Meeting Bursaries to attend BNS annual meetings (max £250)
• Undergraduate and postgraduate elective bursary (sponsored in conjunction with NAN, max £1000)
• NAN elective bursaries are reviewed twice a year,  with applications closing dates 1^st March and 1^st September.

Applications are on a competitive basis and considered by the BNS Academic Committee

Purpose: To support the advancement of Neuropathology.

Applications will be considered for research projects, including both substantive and pilot projects, and projects related to education/training in Neuropathology.

• Grants through the BNS Small Grants Scheme will be reviewed once a year: Spring

• A maximum sum of £20,000 will be allocated to any one application. Applications for smaller sums are welcomed.
• The funds are intended to be used for direct costs associated with the proposed work. Successful applicants cannot apply a second time under this scheme within a period of four years.
• The applicant must be BNS member for at least a year. Preference is given to undergraduate or postgraduate applicants who are at early stages in their careers, but applications from those at later stages in their careers may be considered. All applications require a sponsorship from another BNS member.
• Applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee (Associate Professor Zane Jaunmuktane; email z.jaunmuktane@ucl.ac.uk) using the forms from the links below.

• The closing date for applications is 1^st March each year.

• Each application will be reviewed by members of the BNS Academic Committee or external committee.

• Decisions will be communicated within 20 weeks following the application deadline of 1st March.

• Applicants who were unsuccessful but received favourable comments are encouraged to re-submit the application in the future rounds. Referees’ comments are available on request.

• A report (1-2 pages) on the progress of the research should be sent to the Chair of the Academic Committee within one year of the award. This will assist in assessing future awards. Failure to provide a report will preclude future support in this and other schemes run by the Society.

• Scientific work supported by the BNS Small Grants Scheme should be presented at one of the Society’s meetings within 2-3 years of the award and ideally published in a peer-reviewed journal. Any publications or presentations at meetings by the recipient emanating in part or whole from the Society’s support should acknowledge the support of the BNS.

Purpose: To support participation in scientific meetings and visits to other laboratories for research purposes or to gain experience.

• The applicant must be a member of the BNS for at least a year.

• Holders of permanent NHS or University appointments are not eligible.

• Applicants have to present a paper or poster when there is a call for posters or oral presentations.

• The maximum amount awarded is £750 per application. Awards are limited to one per year per applicant and up to maximum of 3 awards per applicant in total. Consumable costs will not be considered.

• Evidence of support from other sources must be declared.

• Applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee (Associate Professor Zane Jaunmuktane; email z.jaunmuktane@ucl.ac.uk) using the forms from the links below.

• The closing dates for applications are 1^st March and 1^st September each year.

• Applications will be considered for travel reimbursement within 9 months of submission.

• Notifications are sent up to 12 weeks after closing date of the application (1^st March and 1^st September).

• A brief report (one page) documenting the visit must be submitted to the Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee within 3 months of the visit.

Purpose: To encourage early career researchers and trainees, including undergraduate students in science or medicine, PhD students, and clinical trainees in Neuroscience specialities, to attend the BNS annual meeting.

• The applicant must be a member of the BNS for at least a year.
• Preference will be given to applicants participating at the meeting with a presentation (poster or oral presentation).
• Awards are of up to £250 and the funds can be used for travel and accommodation expenses.
• Applications should be submitted at least 2 weeks before the start of the annual meeting.
• Applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Academic Committee (Associate Professor Zane Jaunmuktane; email: z.jaunmuktane@ucl.ac.uk).
• Notifications are sent up to 12 weeks after the submission of the application.

Purpose: To provide financial support to undertake a period of elective, to study neuropathology or neuroscience directly related to neuropathology. The elective may be in the UK or elsewhere in the world.

• Up to 2 grants of £1000 each are available each year.
• Applications must be made at least 8 weeks before the start of the project/elective to the Chair of the Academic Committee (Associate Professor Zane Jaunmuktane; email: z.jaunmuktane@ucl.ac.uk ).
• A letter of support of the supervisor must be included. The applicant, if undergraduate, does not need to be a member of the BNS, but the supervisor must be BNS member. The applicant, if postgraduate, must be a member of the BNS and the supervisor must be BNS member.
• Notifications are sent up to 12 weeks after the submission of the application.
• A written report of the elective period must be submitted within 2 months of the end of the elective. This will be published on the Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology website. A poster presentation at the next annual BNS meeting is encouraged.
